Most of this year’s donations at Great Bend came from the efforts of 10 local schools who took part in a friendly food drive contest held in October that raised a record-breaking £15,280.
Students from the top four participating schools (Jefferson Elementary, Central Kansas Christian Academy, Golden Belt Home Educators, and Lincoln Elementary) received a $1,500 cash prize from a local foundation, Gifting Forward, for their collecting efforts. .
In addition to school contests, additional can and cash donations were collected from Great Bend Alive Finals Friday, September 30, local offices, and monetary donations made online.
All cash and can donations were delivered by Wheatland employees and trustees just before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Earlier this fall, Wheatland set out to “Think BIG!” And this year he will make Cram the Van the biggest, brightest, best year yet. This year’s collection was just over 27 tonnes, an 18% increase over last year’s collection (44,576 pounds).
This brings the nine-year food drive total to 226,908 pounds, or just over 113 tons of food. In his first year of 2014, the food drive raised him 6,615 pounds of food.
This year’s “Think BIG!” campaign consisted of 10 direct donation events across our service areas from September to November.
During this time, Wheatland employees traveled hundreds of miles in big red vans to collect cash and can donations at local events. There, co-op employees and other volunteers grilled hamburgers and hot dogs as a way to show their appreciation to co-op members.
Other communities
The Co-op will also coordinate additional friendly school competitions in three other local school districts (Holcombe US$363, Scott County US$466 and Conway Springs US$356), raising thousands of additional pounds across these communities.
