Tesla confirms 4680 battery cell production now enough for 1,000 cars a week

Tesla has confirmed that production of 4,680 battery cells has reached a level capable of supporting the production of more than 1,000 cars per week. The 4680 battery cell is a new format that Tesla announced in 2020 as the first cell from the ground up for an automaker. Previously, Tesla was involved in cell development, mostly by adjusting the chemistry of the existing 18650 and 2170 cell formats. Tesla now planned to develop its own cell with a much larger format made possible by its tableless design. was also planning. That was over two years ago, and we haven't seen a clear view of Tesla's own 4680 battery cell production progress. Tesla has strictly adhered to manufacturing data for its battery cells. The last official data point Tesla released was the first million cells completed at its Fremont pilot plant, which dates back to February 2022. Since then, Tesla has only released a few statements regarding the rate of production rate increase without confirming the actual production rate. Today, Tesla confirmed its actual production rate for the first time. The team said last week it produced 868,000 4680 battery cells.
That's enough to produce over 1,000 Model Ys. This cell will be used at Gigafactory Texas to build one of his vehicles, a Model Y with a structural battery pack. Alongside the Fremont pilot plant, the automaker is also establishing mass production at its Texas plant for a shorter supply chain.

Electrek take

Constraints on Tesla's battery supply eased last year, thanks to suppliers ramping up production, but much of the automaker's growth in 2023 is expected to come from its ability to ramp up production of its 4680 cells. Therefore, this milestone is suitable to hit just before the New Year. Tesla seemed to have a lot of trouble mass-producing the 4680 cell but these numbers mean Tesla has overcome some of the bigger bottlenecks and a smoother ramp from here is likely to be seen.
