Elmhurst police, DuPage County state’s attorney announce charges against boy, 13, in car theft from Wilkins Hyundai dealership

Elmerst, IL (WLS) -- A 13-year-old boy has been charged with stealing a car from an Elmhurst car dealership, leading to a high-speed chase, suburban officials said Tuesday.

A Chicago boy has been charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of burglary equipment, property damage, and running or attempting to evade a police officer, DuPage County State Attorneys Robert Berlin and Elmhurst said. Police Chief Michael McLean said in a statement.

Elmhurst Police responded to a call to two cars parked off North York Road just before 1:40 am on Monday. The vehicle sped away when officers pulled up behind the 2020 Kia Forte and SUV, police said.

Officers tried to stop the car with emergency lights on when it reached a speed of about 70 mph, police said. Police said the boy's Kia Forte also slammed into oncoming traffic.

Police then called off the chase due to safety concerns.

Shortly before 3:15 a.m., Oak Park police found a Kia with a boy in the front seat. he was detained.

Police said he smashed the car window before driving out of the dealership's parking lot earlier that night.

The teenage boy will be detained until his next court appearance on January 13.
