Evansville, Indiana (WFIE) - The man faces a lengthy charge after police said several people, including a child, tried to stop him from driving under the influence.

It happened on the 1000th block of Baird Park Drive around 2pm on Christmas Day.

According to police, Joshua Winnett was supposed to go to a friend's house in Booneville with this girlfriend and their children.

They say witnesses told them that Winnett wanted to drive, but he was drinking.

His girlfriend allegedly took the key, but he grabbed her arm and dragged her to the ground. They say he ran to her car after kicking her in the stomach.

Police said the two children ran out to stop Winnett.

They say he reversed the car and was nearly run over.

Police say a family friend pulled up behind Winnett and blocked him.

They say one of the children was hanging out from the passenger side of the car after reaching over and trying to retrieve the keys.

Police said Winnett drove the car, blew off snow and ice, drove through the yard and onto the street.

They say the child was trying to escape without being run over, but he says Winnett punched him in the face during the incident.

Police say a deputy pulled Winnett over on Winberg Avenue. She said her license expired in 2015.

Wynnett is on probation for multiple assault charges against public security officials, officers said.

His new charges include domestic assault and reckless crime with a deadly weapon.
