BMW Motorsport intended to build a selection of mid-engined supercars to meet FIA Group 5 regulations. However, when the rules changed, BMW had to build a minimum of 400 examples to meet Group 4 regulations before the BMW M1 could receive Group 5 homologation. Instead of postponing the race program, BMW devised a one-make series and also focused on further development and increased production to meet homologation requirements.

With the most aggressive body kit of its time, the visual difference was obvious. It featured front and rear spoilers inspired by professional cars, flared wheel arches and side skirts, giving it unusual bodywork for its time. Power was increased to 350 horsepower and the engine was combined with a special racing clutch and a new exhaust system. It was still a road car, but it was brutal. This is chassis 4301090 built in 1979 and delivered to BMW dealer Schneider in Bielefeld, Germany in August of that year.
