Elon Musk considers building a new social media platform, stating that freedom of speech is essential to democracy
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk have been discussing the need for a new social media platform on Twitter for the past two days. He has recently become more critical of Twitter and its policies, claiming that social media platforms are weakening. Democracy by not following the principles of free speech.
In response to a question about whether to consider building a new social media platform with an open source algorithm that puts freedom of speech first and minimizes publicity, Musk “takes this seriously.” I answered.
The debate will vote on Twitter’s poll on Friday if Musk believes that 79.2 million followers adhere to the “essential to functioning democracy” principle of free speech. It started when I asked for it.
The Tesla boss emphasized, “The results of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.” Twenty-four hours later, the poll ended with more than two million votes, with 70.4% disagreeing.
Given that Twitter acts as a de facto public town square, democracy is fundamentally undermined if you don’t follow the principles of free speech.
In a follow-up tweet, the CEO of Spacex asked, “Do you need a new platform?”
Some platforms have already advertised as an alternative to free speech, but none are close to the size of Twitter. For example, Parler has gained some attention as an alternative to Twitter, but it’s also a centralized service.
Some platforms are built with distributed open source protocols such as Gab and Truth Social. Gab and Truth Social are platforms recently launched by former US President Donald Trump after Twitter banned them. Truth Social does not take off, and even Trump rarely uses it. Used to build decentralized Twitter alternatives such as Mastodon, Diaspora, Misskey, Friendica, Pleroma and Twister.
