“I think it was the reality that kind of hit me.”
You remember the iconic Shawn Mendes – Camila Cabello relationship from 2019 to 2022. We’ll learn about it in the textbooks one day.
We’ve seen them slay the Met Gala carpet together…
They gave us “Señorita”, and we watched them play together and pretend they were going to kiss all the time…
And then we saw them doing this after people criticized their relationship…
Like, we’ve been through a lot with these two.
So when they announced (in a joint statement) that they were breaking up, we were all like, “OMG??!!”
Camila opened up about her split from Zane Lowe earlier this month: “My priorities have fluctuated and my focus has changed throughout my life,” she said. “Even now, when I’m in promo mode – honestly, if I’m not having fun, what’s the point? I think as you get older, priorities change. And I feel like it was like that for both of us.
And aside from his beautiful, upbeat breakup song “It’ll Be Okay,” we’ve never really heard Shawn’s perspective — until this weekend. He posted this behind-the-scenes clip of him talking about life after the breakup at his piano.
“A lot of the stuff that also resonates in the lyrics for me is like, ‘Oh, fuck.’ You know, you don’t realize, when you break up with someone, you think it’s the right thing to do,” Shawn said.
“Don’t you realize all this shit that comes after. Like, who do I call when I’m having a panic attack? Who do I call when I’m, like, fucking on the edge?”
“I think that’s the reality that hit me,” he continued. “It’s like, ‘Oh, I’m all alone now,'” he said.
“Now I feel like I’m finally alone, and I hate it. It’s my reality, you know?”
Shawn has always spoken about his anxiety and mental health and more recently how the pandemic has affected him.
“The silence [of the pandemic] brought to the surface a lot of anxiety that I had to get over, and on the other side of that there was a period of reflection for me where I could say, “Oh, that’s what I ‘ve done. It’s crazy,'” he told Zane in 2020. “That’s what I can do. It’s art. It’s bigger than me.”
Luckily, Shawn is going to therapy, Camila revealed last year, so he’s in good hands. I always love when celebrities are very open about their mental health issues and their realities.
Thank you for sharing your reality and your point of view – and for always being so open, Shawn. Hang in there, buddy!
