March 2022 Madness predictions: College basketball expert picks against spread, odds for second-round games

March Madness and the 2022 NCAA Tournament marathon continue Sunday with eight games involving 16 teams in action with just eight spots remaining in this year’s Sweet 16. With the bracket slowly taking shape after a frenetic Saturday where eight teams secured places in the second weekend, Sunday marks the last day of this season’s opening weekend with a busy slate expected to kick off just after noon on East cost.

Each game has a single-digit betting spread, suggesting the entire roster should be filled with close matches, including Arizona – the only No. 1 seed in action on Sunday – despite being favored by 9.5 on the No. 9 TCU seed for the biggest spread of the day.

Other contests should on paper be much tighter. Today’s headliner between No. 2 seed Duke and No. 7 seed Michigan State features a Hall of Fame coaching battle with Mike Krzyzewski and Tom Izzo. The Blue Devils, the ACC regular season champions, are favored by 6.5 points over the Spartans despite Coach K’s 12-3 record against Izzo as well as a definite talent advantage.

To prepare you for the final day of Round 2, I’ve called on our straight and against the spread pick experts to help you pick your medium (and hopefully make cheddar in along the way). our expert support.

Be sure to stick with CBS Sports for the rest of the month for NCAA Tournament coverage through the end of the Final Four. Let’s take a look at our expert picks for Sunday’s final second-round matchup slate.

NCAA Tournament: second-round pick

(4) Illinois vs. (5) Houston

Sunday, 12:10 p.m. | CBS, March Madness Live: Illinois had to pull out of a double-digit deficit against Chattanooga in the first round and escaped despite losing for all but 25 seconds of the game. It’s a stark contrast to Houston and its ho-hum cruise 14 points ahead of UAB. But the Illini couldn’t have played much worse on offense and Houston, with all its injuries, is down to par against a very talented team coached by Brad Underwood. Sounds like a situation where the wrong team is favored, so I’ll take the points with Illinois. Pick: Illinois +4.5

(2) Villanova vs. (7) Ohio State

Sunday, 2:40 p.m. | CBS, March Madness Live: What Ohio State did defensively to a veteran-laden Loyola-Chicago team in the first round shouldn’t be ignored. with a top-15 offense led by rising freshman Malaki Branham and star EJ Liddell, I love them to cover the number against an explosive Villanova offense that surprisingly looked sideways in the first round against Delaware . (2) Duke vs. (7) Michigan State

Sunday, 5:15 p.m. | CBS, March Madness Live: Duke’s defense during the season left something to be desired and played a key role in losing two of its first five games to open March. Still, this Blue Devils team has heaps of talent and with five potential first-rounders, I’m laying the points down and trusting Coach K’s dominance over Izzo in the head-to-head series of all time prevailing with some comfort. Sparty can keep that close, but not sure they’ve got the horses to go the distance and keep him in the numbers. Choose: Duke -6.5

(3) Wisconsin vs. (11) Iowa State

Sunday, 6:10 p.m. | TNT, March Madness live: Questions about the health of Badgers star Johnny Davis were not immediately answered in the first round as Wisconsin battled No. 14 seed Colgate as they opened Game 3 of 11. But Davis went back to his old ways in the second half, finishing with 25 points in the win and knocking down big shots in the streak The advantage he gives Wisconsin plus Iowa State’s inconsistent offensive production makes me lean the Badgers to this location. (3) Texas Tech vs. (11) Notre Dame

Sunday, 7:10 p.m. | TBS, March Madness Live: Texas Tech’s No. 1-ranked defensive unit wasn’t the most impressive part of its first-round win over Montana State. This distinction belonged to his attack. The Red Raiders hung 97 points in the win and had six players – led by 20 from Terrence Shannon Jr. and 20 from Bryson Williams – finish with at least 10 points as the team made 12 of their 20 3-point attempts . I don’t expect them to keep shooting this hot, but I expect Tech’s defense and offense to cover against an ND team that played a lot of basketball on opening weekend. Pick: Texas Tech -7.5

(2) Auburn vs. (10) Miami (Florida)

Sunday, 7:45 p.m. | truTV, March Madness Live: Auburn has lost four of its last nine games leading into the NCAA Tournament, but went back to its old ways in the first round as it strangled Jacksonville State 80-61 and outscored the performance-led defense in nine blocks by Walker Kessler. This looks like the Tigers team that at one point was No. 1 in all college hoops. I’m putting the number with them here against a Miami team that’s very feisty but not quite suited to beating the Tigers. Choose: Auburn -7.5

It just hasn’t been a good team all year. Purdue has the staff to make the Longhorns pay if they don’t. bring their A-game, and with the duo of Jaden Ivey and Zach Edey coming off big games, I love the Boilermakers. Pick: Purdue -3.5
