Ukrainians have already traveled to the EU without a visa and were able to stay for 90 days. Currently, under the EU’s “Temporary Protection Directive”, Ukrainian citizens who have fled as a result of the invasion, and their partners and children of all nationalities, are permitted. Stay in EU countries for one year.
If Ukraine remains dangerous, its status could eventually be extended to three years.
The EU government is expected to at least help Ukrainians find housing and enable them to work, go to school, benefit from social welfare and receive routine medical care.
They can apply for asylum at any time, and if Ukraine becomes safe again, EU countries are expected to help them return if they so desire.
Let’s take a look at the past few days on the ground.
